Reconciliation demands a Mediator.
The word "Reconciliation" has a prefix, which is "re-". It means do it again, or anew, it means going back to the original. At first human beings, we were friendly and at peace with God before Sin separated us and made us the enemies of God. As the result, a Mediator was needed in order to put us back in right standing with God.
Any reconciliation demands a mediator. A mediator is someone who negotiates between parties seeking mutual agreement. Therefore we had no powers to negotiate our reconciliation before God. Yet we also could not redeem ourselves from sin and death by paying a price to God (Psa 49:7-9). Unless we find a mediator who is like God to reconcile us, because there was no one in heaven or on earth or under the earth would be able to reconcile us back to God.
Reconciliation does not come so easily, for no one can ever pay enough price, in order for us to have a God fulfilling life and to live forever and never see the grave. Considering, that the Old Testament was only paying yearly installments with the blood of animals without reaching to the righteousness that God required (Heb 10:3). Yes! keeping and working the Law seemed right to them, but instead, those Commandments and sacrifices actually reminded them of their sins year after year.
For the law never made anything perfect (Heb 7:19). Nevertheless, our Mediator gave us confidence and a better hope, through which it reconciled us back to God. The High Priests failed to reconcile us with God. Because in the beginning God made man upright, but now humanity is seeking their own ways to reconcile themselves to God. It is impossible to take back what belongs to us from God, with our own righteousness. We only need to be given by the one who negotiates for our forgiveness. Our cultures and traditions failed us, for there was no man or ancestor who could negotiate for us. We only needed someone who is like God to stand between God and us, as a Mediator.
The Gospel that was introduced by our Mediator Jesus Christ, it is not only the revelation of God's Love, but it is specifically about reconciliation and justification. However, now God has shown us a way to be reconciled with him without keeping the requirements of the law, as He promised in the writings of Moses and the prophets long ago (Rom 3:21-22). Reconciliation is not like religion we don't need to join certain organization that worship God but we firstly need to trust and believe in what our Mediator has done for us. We are only reconciled with God by placing our faith in Jesus Christ. And this is true for everyone who believes, no matter who we are.
[For there is one God and one Mediator who can reconcile God and humanity—the man Christ Jesus.]
